I am just a couple rooms away and it works fine. I recommend getting it with sagetv, but you can use what you want I would recommend MVPMC (media mvp media center) software over the standard software for increased functionality. I recommend using it wired if u have this option, if not then you can use it wirelessly provided you are not to far from the signal. I bought this one because it's wireless, it will operate wired directly if you already have your home networked otherwise it works pretty well.Immediately I used its software to watch shows I recorded with Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150 PCI TV Tuner with Remote Control (1045) I used it's software immediately which is nice, but it lacked watching live tv, it also works with GBPVR and will give you the ability to watch live tv, and all pvr functionality. This is a great Product, and cheaper than most other wireless pvr solutions most of the time it works completely fine, to save space I record using an svcd format, and most of the time I have no problem playing back files. I switched from that to Sagetv media center edition when zap2it dropped free listings. It works well with sage and gbpvr, but I also understand it works with other pvr softwares such as beyond tv and mythtv. Occasionaly I will have to reboot the mediamvp to re establish the connection, but most of the time it works just fine.
I hope Hauppauge will make the effort to improve this device because I think they are on the right track but needss work. I investigated every option I had but was unsuccessful in getting it to work, Sadly, I eventually had to return the item. I bought this product because I believed it truly was the right approach as a media extender for what I use, which is "Beyond TV". I have a wireless network set up which has excellent signal strength and was recognized by the MediaMVP but, for some reason, was not able to acquire an IP address from my router.
All of this is documented on Hauppauge's support page. MVPMedia.exe will then try that username/password for any computer you attempt to share files from in the "Search For Media" indexing service. Both networked computers must use the same admin username/password combo. It will share files across multiple networked computers but you must tell the MVPMedia.exe service the admin username/password to give it full access to the shared computer(s). Hope this helps. Right-click on MVPMedia.exe and select Properties. Go to Control panel->Administrative Tools->Services. Then click on the Log On tab and tell it to use "\.YOURUSERNAME" without the quotes and then type in your password and then confirm your password.
I wired last year all other devices to make use of 100 MBit network speed. I am very disappointed with the overall functionality, usability and quality of the product and suggest not to buy it, if any of the issues, which I mentioned are a concern for you. When I mapped network folders and entered them manually as to be scanned, did they show up as directories on the TV, but no files are being indexed, thus inaccessible. The next bummer was the user interface on the TV. I tested it with a laptop in the same room, which worked perfectly fine and was able to use the maximum speed the wireless network was able to provide. The setup was relatively easy if you follow the instructions and not try to figure stuff out by yourself (which will result in a few dead ends and double work).
Either is the wireless receiver low quality or the video decoder sucks. You can't switch to a simpler list mode to be able to fit more videos on a single page. I can't tell, because I am not a technician and the MVP does not provide any tool for checking the wireless connection speed.Conclusion. The slower wireless speed should be sufficient for video streaming though, but that does not seem to be the case. The wireless router is not far away, but in another room (I would not have used wireless if I would had have the router in the same room and used network cable instead).
After I had it setup and running and installed the "indexing" service on my computer did I learned that the software is unable to include files from a network share and only locally stored files. You also do not have any sorting option nor are you able to see any details of the video in the listings. The problem is not with the wireless network. bummer, good that I bought a network storage for my video library a couple months earlier to be able to access it from multiple devices. Videos hang and lag from time to time. I use the wireless option and the Media MVP is the ONLY wireless device in my home network.
Big Icons to fit 6 directories or videos on the screen are good for the visually impaired people with only a few dozen videos on their local hard disk, but not for me, who has an 120 vision, big screen TV and several hundred videos. You can see some details if you select a video, like format, length and date created, but that's about it.
The only plus that this device has is that it works with GB-PVR, but I can't use that until I have an ethernet cable running to my living room. Plus, if it did work, the device only supports WEP, which is just about as good as taping your front door closed. Stick with the cheaper wired version, which is available at other retailers, such as NevvE@@. I will soon be using this device as a hard wired device. It does not support SEVERAL new routers, including all type N routers that I have researched, and the D-Link - Xtreme N Wireless-N Gigabit Router does not work for sure.
